In an early installation of the pages of the artist book Twenty Thousand Leagues Under Seas, hanging measurements were taken from mistakes in early English translations of Jules Verne’s classic adventure story, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1870). When Verne’s text was initially translated into English, the hundreds of measurements and distances listed in the novel were changed from the metric system to the English imperial one. Translators often failed to make correct mathematical conversions and also sometimes swapped out words without altering the figures (eg, 1 kilometer = 0,62 mile).
