I attempted to write a narrative in Volapük, a constructed global language invented by Johann Marten Schleyer in 1879. This was then tranlsated into the correct form by Jean-Claude Caraco. The resulting story, Lusag Plana Rigik (The Legend of the Primal Plant), was exhibited as part of The Global Contemporary: Art Worlds After 1989 at the ZKM | Museum of Contemporary Art. The narrative was made into a series of posters exhibited in the exhibition space and also printed in the Offenburger Tageblatt. This German newspaper has been running since 1812 with a circulation that extends across the region of Baden-Württemburg, where Volapük originated and ZKM is also located. Typeface designers Avoid Red Arrows were commissioned to develop a font for Volapük’s specific requirements and historical context. The resulting Plan has been used in all designs. For a translation of the legend and more information about Volapük and language issues during that time, see here.
